Secrets in a Small Town is a 2019 thriller released on Lifetime. Helmed by Thoman Michael, Secrets in a Small Town originally premiered in March at Canadian Film Fest, under the title Nowhere, before making its way to Lifetime. It stars Kate Drummond, Rya Kihlstedt, and Al Mukadam in lead roles. The movie is based on the story of a widowed woman who relocates to a small town with her teenage daughter Sarah. In a turn of events, Sarah disappears after her basketball tryouts. The police tells Claire that her daughter's case has reached a dead-end and thus she decides to take matters into her own hands. Read on to know whether Secrets in a Small Town is based on a true story or not.
There are several real-life cases that have some uncanny resemblances with this tragic case. For example, KHOU 11 reported that 19-year-old cheerleader Natasha Atchley was found burned and dead in the trunk of her car in 1992 after she went to a party in the small town of Shepherd, Texas. The case was about to get easily solved with a witness coming forward to tell a story about two people who allegedly beat her up at the party, but that person later changed their story. Since then, the case has remained unsolved.
In 2011, the New York Times also reported a similar case about Joseph Helt, who disappeared in 1987 when he was just 17 years old. He went out with a few friends at a party and seemingly vanished into the night. During a 2011 candlelight vigil, a strange incident happened when an unknown person tore several posters of him which made Helt's former classmates and friends believe that someone in their small New York town knew more than they were revealing about his unsolved case.
It is a big deal, though. Claire calls everyone she knows while driving around town and looking everywhere for her. She even stops a random girl on the street because she thinks it is her daughter. She then goes to the police, the first place these movies usually go. Thankfully, a hot cop is there to help her. The sheriff, on the other hand, is a very small town mentality and not too concerned. (He makes up a bunch of excuses as to why she would be missing.) When the hot cop suggests bringing in the team for questioning, the sheriff is more concerned with his niece, Maddie, getting into college. He reluctantly agrees to interview the girls on the team.
Secrets in a Small Town originally premiered in March at Canadian Film Fest, under the title Nowhere, before making its way to Lifetime. It stars Kate Drummond as Claire, a recently widowed woman who relocates to a small town with her teenage daughter Sarah. However, things taken a turn for the worst when Sarah disappears after her basketball tryouts. The police tell Claire that the case is basically a dead-end, forcing her to take matters into her own hands. She starts to question several people in the town, including the girls' basketball coach, and ends up uncovering a series of dark secrets to reveal the truth about her daughter's disappearance.
There are several real-life cases that loosely mirror this tragic case. For example, KHOU 11 reported that 19-year-old cheerleader Natasha Atchley was found burned and dead in the trunk of her car in 1992 after going to a party in the small town of Shepherd, Texas. At first, the case seemed like it would be solved with a witness coming forward about two people who allegedly beat her up at the party, but that person later changed their story. Since then, the case has remained unsolved, even though Atchley's family told KHOU 11 that they believe there are people refusing to share details that could help solve the case.
In 2011, the New York Times also reported on the continued search for Joseph Helt, who disappeared in 1987 when he was just 17 years old. Helt hung out with a few friends at a part and seemingly vanished into the night. During a 2011 candlelight vigil, several posters of him were torn down by an unknown person, causing Helt's former classmates and friends to believe that someone in their small New York town knew more than they were letting on about his unsolved case.
Ruth Simmons was the head coach of a small town girls high school basketball team, which had her daughter, Kat, as the team captain. She was shown briefly watching new student Sarah Porter - the daughter of the school's newly hired vice principal Claire Porter - shooting jumpshots, and it led to Ruth approaching Claire regarding Sarah joining her team. With Claire's permission, Sarah practiced with the team, and afterwards, Ruth welcomed her to the squad.
As my Spacing colleague Glyn Bowerman recently noted, this underlying appeal of small-town urbanism is often reflected in plots that deal with the minutiae of municipal management. After all, becoming interested in city politics is a first step on the road towards becoming a full-blown urbanist.
Though the story begins and ends with Jo, Winslow revolves the narrative among a half-dozen characters. This technique allows him to expand the world-building that started in "In West Mills" (2019), his debut novel. Jo is not the only one who escapes this small town only to be sucked back into its dense orbit.
Yes, that certainly resonates with me. As I gathered the photographs and police reports on an individual basis, they seemed to represent strange one-offs, singularly surreal events, atypical sights, or absurd moments. Each felt like an anomaly in terms of the ordinary, everyday status quo of a small New England college town. Yet during the process of editing and sequencing the work, certain motifs surfaced, which led me to group images and text into what might be described as loose chapters. The work suggested themes that exist and are relevant not only in Amherst, but that resonate in the wider American cultural and political landscape today. These include a rising sense of paranoia; evidence of increasingly xenophobic and misogynistic beliefs and behaviors; dysfunctional personal, familial, and sexual relationships; expressions of frustration and rebellion and the dampening of these by figures of authority; and more. For me, what began as a quaint or tongue-in-cheek take on the funny little things that go on in a small town suddenly turned into an unexpectedly meaningful and unsettling reflection on the state of the American psyche today.
Located in the hills of scenic Bosnia & Herzegovina lies this magical little town you can enjoy almost all to yourself! Počitelj is one of the best-kept secrets in the country and is fortunately just a short drive from Mostar. Contrary to Počitelj, Mostar has a huge number of tourists visiting daily from nearby Dubrovnik, just across the border in Croatia. As far as the secret small towns in Europe go, this is one of the best-kept secrets of all.
This would indeed have to be the most photographed street in the Cotswolds! This small town is filled with old-world charm and could very well be the most charming town in England. The Cotswolds are one of our top choices for an English countryside escape, especially if you can visit over the summer months.
These small, usually rural, communities have the same problems that their counterparts in metropolitan areas have, including substance abuse, violent crime, and homelessness. But small towns have small tax bases, which results in less funding for personnel, training, equipment, technology and other resources that local, state, and tribal law enforcement need to prevent crime and maintain public safety.
